ミレシア属には学名 M.pendula と M.laurentii があり、前者はアジア産で和名では紫鉄刀木、またミレシア、チンウィンと呼ばれ、後者はアフリカ産で主にウェンジ (Wenge) 、その他ジゲラ 、パリサンドルドコンゴなどと呼ばれます。
カッシア属の鉄刀木とは別物です。
材は空気に触れると暗褐色から紫褐色になり、規則的で美しい年輪の縞が見えます。
非常に硬くて重く、装飾的な用途が高いため建築材としての価値も高いです。
アジア産の良質材の挽きたては赤紫色であるところです。
現在流通しているのは、当時輸入された材のみです。
タイ・ビルマでは、鉄刀木より紫鉄刀木の育成分布本数が元々少ないといわれていて、今では貴重な材で幻の材となりつつあります。
特に入手が難しくなってきた良質な紫鉄刀木はかなり貴重です。

In Thailand and Burma, it is said that the growing number of Shitetsutoki trees is less than Senna siamea, it is on the verge of becoming a valuable and phantom wood now.
In particular, high-quality Shitetsutogi, which has become difficult to obtain, is quite valuable.
